Abduragiem

One of the biggest challenges I face when taking street portraits is people smiling. When I see someone looking cool and standing in some nice light. I ask to take a shot and invariably, they step out of the light and smile broadly at camera - Turning what could have been an interesting shot into a family snap of someone who isn’t in my family.

Occasionally, I get lucky though and meet someone like Abduragiem.

Abduragiem is 10 years old. He and him mum, Mishka were walking home when I took this shot. They live in Woodstock, Cape Town. Abduragiem wants to be a doctor when he grows up. He loves soccer and Manchester United and as you can see, certainly knows how to pose for a photo.
