Shahad
Shahad is originally from Iraq but now lives in London, she is pictured here in Trafalgar Square with her son Isaac. She and her family along with thousands of other Muslims, had come into central London to mark the day of Ashura.
Ashura is the anniversary of the death of Hussain ibn Ali in the 7th century.
During his lifetime, Hussain was known widely for his compassion and integrity. He was a highly respected man but his pursuit of social justice ultimately cost him his life. He refused to pledge allegiance to the corrupt leaders of the time and spoke out against them. This lead to Hussain, his family, including his 6-month old son, being killed at the battle of Karbala.
All over the world millions gather peacefully on the day of his death to pay tribute to Hussain. Many recite poems in memory of his good deeds and others perform acts of kindness and charity as a way to keep alive the principles and values Hussain gave his life for.
